Xpeng Denies Private Negotiations with the European Union

He Xiaopeng, chairman of Xpeng, recently addressed tariff concerns during an interview at the Paris Motor Show, leading to various social media influencers suggesting on Weibo that Xpeng had engaged in private discussions with the European Union, “backstabbing” the Chinese automotive industry.

In response, Xpeng stated, “This is spreading false information online, creating and disseminating identical content, engaging in organized rumor-spreading, manipulating public opinion, which is illegal.” Xpeng also officially responded to the media, stating, “We have never privately reached any form of tariff agreement with the European Union. Xpeng strictly adheres to the unified deployment of relevant national authorities and participates in and cooperates with EU tariff negotiation work.”

During the 2024 Paris Motor Show, Xpeng unveiled its global strategy 2.0 and introduced new initiatives tailored for the European market, alongside the official pre-sale launch of their latest AI vehicle, the P7+.

In addressing the issue of potential tariffs imposed by the European Commission, He Xiaopeng expressed concerns regarding the impact of high tariffs on profits and sales. He emphasized the importance of stability in tariffs, highlighting the challenges posed by frequent policy changes.

He also emphasized the necessity for a long-term approach and collaboration with local stakeholders to establish a strong global presence. He noted the importance of mutual benefit and learning from established companies like Volkswagen and Renault, focusing on their strengths rather than shortcomings.
